Exclusive Interview: Rising Artist DL

By  |
What is your name and what city do you rep?
DL. I rep Queens, NY

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest single is called DAF (Drink and F**K). I wanted to make a song with a party vibe, not so serious but fun, and showcased my personality when I holler at a woman. I think of it as a more explicit version of Netflix and Chill.

What is unique about you and your music?
I truly believe I bring a genuine perspective and truism when it comes to this music shit. I talk the talk but more so walk the walk. My rep is validated and solidified. I’m giving you the real DL and everything that comes with him.

What shaped your music?
Life. Simple and plain. My music is my thoughts and experiences over beats.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
When I was about 13. Maybe even before that. But 13 was when I started paying for studio time to record.

What type of music do you listen to?
listen to a pretty broad range. I rock with hip hop, of course, R&B, old school R&B, Soft Rock, Jazz, Pop, etc. I can go from Jay Z to Aerosmith, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, and Earth, Wind & Fire all in one playlist.

What inspires you to write music?
Great artists, good music, and life experiences.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
I am a creative at heart so everything I do is pretty much in a creative mind state. I have a real estate rehab and construction company, a clothing line, and also a film production company. It’s a lot that keeps me busy but I have a desire for each thing because it allows me to express myself and put my personal touch on all my projects.

Happiness to you is…
Peace of mind.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Stay the course, stay consistent, and most importantly, surround yourself with people who share the same drive, ambition, and passion as you. Time is your biggest asset. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…
We have the follow-up to the film King of Paper Chasin’ we made a few years ago. The sequel has taken a lot longer than we wanted it to but it looks like we are finally on track to bring it to our audience who has been more than patient and understanding.

Where do we find you music / music projects?
I am on platforms i.e. Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, etc. The film King of Paper Chasin’ can still be found on Amazon Prime.

Any last words for the readers?
Yes. Be ready because I’m coming and I bought my Triplebeam Family with me. Salute!
