Getting To Know Up And Coming R&B Singer, Songwriter Kenyada Nikile

We asked a bunch of questions to really get to know the soulful, beautiful artist known as Kenyada Nikile.

 

What first got you into music?

Kenyada Nikile: What first got me into music, mmm I loved listening to music as a little girl, actually my daycare bus driver Arthur O Eve Jr overheard me singing “Weak” by SWV, and said I sounded just like the singers on the radio.

What made you come up with your stage name?

Kenyada Nikile:  I was born with it…lol

What is your most-craziest moment after a show? 

Kenyada Nikile: The most-craziest moment for me is realizing how much of a response I received from the crowd, and had people actually thanking me for the performance

What’s your favorite fashion trend to wear?

Kenyada Nikile: I prefer to wear hats, high socks over leggings, with sneakers, you know I’ve been on that! 

What was life like growing up? 

Kenyada Nikile: Life was horrible growing up for me, in and out of the foster care system, my mother and father struggled with mental health, and me, and my brother were shuffled around a lot..just sad you know!

Tell us one of your best memories with music? Without?

Kenyada Nikile:  My best memory with music is when I auditioned for Buffalo Performing Arts, and got accepted.  My worst memory with music was singing for the people in foster care; like actually having to stand up on demand and sing for “people”..kinda weird

Funniest moments?

Kenyada Nikile: the funniest moments for me are during performances when I forget a word, and no one ever knows

Who inspires you to make music?

Kenyada Nikile: My brother inspired, and continues to inspire me

How would you describe the music you typically create?

Kenyada Nikile: The kind of music I create comes from within; pain, soulful, gospel, and street all mixed in one I called it Bluesy

What is your creative process like?

Kenyada Nikile: My creative process is not limited or the same; I have all types of ways I create. It’s a moment thing, something that I heard, seen or felt, then I put something together..It’s simple..organic..i don’t force it.

Who would you want to collaborate with?

Kenyada Nikile: I would love to collaborate with Drake, Kanye, Conway, Benny the Butcher, Jhene Aiko and many more.

If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be?

Kenyada Nikile: I would love to open a show for Mary J Blige or Jhene Aiko.

What is one message you would give to your fans? 

Kenyada Nikile: One message I would say to my fans “Faith Without Work Is Dead”

What is the most useless talent that you have?

Kenyada Nikile: I do not have any useless talents; ill figure it out

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Kenyada Nikile: Of course I sing in the shower! My favorite songs to sing are those I just make up in the moment.

What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?

Kenyada Nikile: If I wasn’t doing music I would be a working MOM..everyday still.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite venues? 

Kenyada Nikile: I have performed at multiple venues. It’s hard to just pick one.

How do you feel the internet has impacted the music business?

Kenyada Nikile: I feel the internet has over saturated the music business; a million things going on at once not really sure how to say it.

What is your favorite song to perform?

Kenyada Nikile: my favorite song to perform is “Life Is What You Make It”, written by MYSELF

Which famous music artists do you admire?

Kenyada Nikile: I admire, Aretha Franklin, Sade, Whitney Houston, Jhene Aiko, Prince, Michael Jackson

What is the most trouble you have ever gotten into? 

Kenyada Nikile:  The most trouble I’ve gotten into ? Hmm.. I mean I’ve had my fair share of troubles–Fighting, but have always conquered. I beat a few people up in my day.

What is the best advice you have been given?

Kenyada Nikile: The best advice I have been given was from my brother. He told me never fold, stay ten toes down, be disciplined, be humble, put my lip gloss on and SING my heart out.

If you could change anything about the music industry what would it be?

Kenyada Nikile: If I could change anything about the music industry it would be to have music focus on what you can do, not who you know!!!

What’s next for you?

Kenyada Nikile: I’M NEXT! It’s only up from here. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT!
