NYC Comedian KEN STARRRZ Introduces Us To RICO: The Viral Phenomenon That’s Got Us All Dancing to 80’s Freestyle Music Again.

By  |

RICO, who is played by Ken Starrrz, became a sensation on social media earlier this year after fans fell in love with the Freestyle dancing icon and his love for the once popular 80s Dance music. Shortly after RICO was introduced to the world, the hashtag #TheRicoChallenge was born. Ken Starrrz who is born and raised around Spanish Harlem/ The Bronx, says he created his character RICO because of his own love for the era of the dance music made famous by artists like Stevie B., TKA, Noel, Lil Suzie, Shannon, The Cover Girls, George LaMond, Lisa Lisa, Stevie B and Judy Torres just to name a few. The genre of Latin dance music, known as Freestyle was born in New York City and was popular during the late 80s and early 90s but seemed to fade away when the Grunge and Pop Era started to take off. RICO has reminded us of our Love for Freestyle and has proved that it’s still influential on the culture of New York City Music today. Freestyle music as RICO describes it is “a dance- R&B type of music that anyone who lived in New York during the 80s and 90s would most definitely know.”25 years later, RICO has taken us back to one of the greatest dancing eras to have ever taken over the City along with the memories the Freestyle music gave us.

RICO, the city’s dancing legend is known for his love of the ladies, his wild black locks, and his one of a kind pop & lock dance movesA recent video of Rico dancing in the city posted to social media has now been viewed on TikTok over 500k times and on Instagram over 250K times. To date, RICO has garnered well over 1 million views and counting.

Once #TheRicoChallenge hashtag exploded on social media, fans of the music from all over started dancing to Freestyle Music again. Ken Starrrz tells me that RICO isn’t an alter ego but instead he’s a regular guy, who like him is from Spanish Harlem. He tells me RICO, who is from this era, just misses the good old 80s Freestyle Music Era. Ken says “RICO is not my alter Ego. I AM RICO. RICO is me. We all got a little RICO in us that misses the nostalgic 80s music. Im so happy that people have been dancing to it and reminiscing the best days of it.” He tells me although Freestyle is his own favorite kind of musicRICO loves any type of music he can dance to and that brings him closer to the ladies. Freestyle is the coolest though because of the Vibe you get from it. Rico’s love of 1980’s Freestyle dates back to his childhood where he was raised by it every Saturday morning while my house was being cleaned to some TKA, George LaMondCynthia. Their music was always blasting on the boom box speakers. You know when you heardthat music playing in the house and the whole crib was getting scrubbed spotless!”

Now that RICO and #TheRicoChallenge hashtag are trending, Ken Starrrz tells me the fans have taken Rico far beyond social media. Just a few weeks ago Ken finished recording his own Freestyle song entitled “Watchin’ You.” He then went on to create a music video for it but not before RICO called out the city to come dance with him on set. To Ken Starrrz’ssurprise, hundreds of people turned out to the filmingThe music video which is due out June 12th, is one of the most anticipated videos of Rico to date. I asked Ken Starrrz what he thought about people saying he is the one to bring Freestyle music back to us and he tells me “after this music video comes out for my new single “Watchin’ You” I’m gonna tell you this much . I’m really gonna bring freestyle back to you again YOU HEA ME BAYBEE!!!!”
