Trillest Entertainment Presents: Exclusive Interview With Rising Artist Darian Vanity King

By  |

What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Darian Vanity King and I rep Calgary, AB.
The most underrated & talented city in Canada!

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

This year has been crazy for releases. From May to September, I released a new single every single week which took my online presence from zero to well above my small city expectations!

To wrap it up, I dropped 4 track EP… All while in album mode working on my label’s collaborative compilation album called “Suite16” by S16. It’s been high energy, long hours, and lots of effort in every track.

The inspiration came from finding true happiness in the freedom I received for the better part of 2020. While we were all on lockdown at home. I locked down in the studio and everything I wanted to say, I said it. Complete freedom!

S16’s new album is available on all major platforms, and features the best artists in my city combining styles, sounds, and influences from all over the world. We are a diverse group of artists and our album shows that.

What is unique about you and your music?

I think what makes my music unique is the raw honesty and realness mixed with the melodies that are meant to just hook your attention. I’ve been developing for years with AMAG/Cash Money Records and it’s really starting to show.

What shaped your music?

Experiences have really influenced my most recent music. Taking the good and the bad from each experience, and not just telling the story, just approaching the story in a way where I can make it enjoyable to my listeners. Really just being myself and not holding back because there are things I didn’t want my family to see or hear of me/from me in the past.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

There is actually a date I could put on this, haha!
It was in January 2019 that I decided I was going to take all my savings (which I had saved up to buy a house) and run up all my credit cards, dig up all my available funds and dive head first into the business alongside my label manager Bronco @broncoalways.

I put all my cards on the table without a lifeline or a safety boat. I went from financially secure, to broker than broke, and I, like other artists would do it again for the opportunity to do what you love for a lifetime!

January 2019 I realized I was willing to give up everything I had earned and built to make music professionally.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to the type of music I enjoy making. I love that trap sound! I’m a new wave type of guy. It has to be energetic. It can be slow – don’t get me wrong – it just has to make me feel the energy.

What inspires you to write music?

I’m a very calm person by nature. Very few people have ever heard me raise my voice or get aggressive… that is until I get on the mic! The need to share all my thoughts and feelings mixed with my daily experiences, the people I meet, the places I’ve been, the things that I’ve done… they inspire me to write and create music. The love for creating a new song then playing it 1000 times to myself just to enjoy, giving myself my own validation and being happy with my growth… that’s what inspires me!

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I’m a businessman first and foremost, everything I do is handled in a professional manner and I love to manage and conduct business in all forms. Sales, finance, and marketing. Behind the scenes when I’m not creating music, I’m handling business. Suit and tie type of guy. I’ve never smoked weed so I get my high off of closing a sale and completing a business deal. I get PUMPED! ENERGIZED!
And then when I’m done, I bump my own music to celebrate.

Happiness to you is…

Happiness to me is freedom. Freedom to do what I want when I want with who I want where I want. Freedom without limitations. It’s being with my friends and family. It’s having a ear-gasm everytime I hear a track that just makes me go “ooooooooooooowwwweeeee”! Happiness is creative expression and not being held back, or holding myself back.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

I wish I was taught about quality and the importance of making quality music. I wish I was taught about music as a business and not as a hobby, and maybe then I would’ve made more decisions based on logic and not on emotion.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

I’m back to creation mode. It takes a lot to release over 30 songs in the same year, all while juggling the compilation album where I feature on another 8 singles, and handling other parts of the business as well. So now I’m back to the drawing board, creating new beats, writing new songs, and just building off the new audience I have developed over the year. I am working closely with AMAG/Cash Money Records on what my next 2 years may look like. So far, I see a lot of plane rides in my future haha!
