Dream Ear Productions: Freedom Of Beats
DeShawn Davis, the owner of Dream Ear Productions, is coming for the top spot in beat production with the release of his beat mixtape, ‘The Stuff That DREAMS Are Made of 1.0’. We sat him down for a short interview and to sum it all up; he’s a genius. Here’s what he had to say:
“Do you know why Hip Hop is the number 1 genre in the world?
It’s because Hip Hop was built on freedom of expression, inclusion, and the ability to use all types of styles and sounds in producing a record. When listening to TSTDAMO1 we hear elements from Drum N’ Bass, opera, orchestral, trap, and more. We hear music that can be used for a wedding and music for the car ride to the club. The magic happens in making fit together into something that isn’t corny.
When coming up with ideas I love feeling free enough to use whatever sound or style that inspires me. It doesn’t matter if I hear a sound in a movie, or if I’m walking down the street and hear a car alarm with a good tempo, I’m free to explore that idea in my production.
I don’t intentionally try to sound different from other artists. I make music that I believe sounds good and see a vision for. I love it when great bars are rapped over other genres of music. I love it when beats slap (makes your head nod and has good bass/drums). I love melodies, chords, breaks, bridges, drops, and small details in mixes. When making music I imagine what the video, movie, or video game it would fit to.”
