Introducing Rising Texas Artist: Blakk Juu
What is your name and what city do you rep?
My name is Blakk Juu and I represent the city of Dallas, Tx
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest release was my album titled “The intro” which included a number of singles I released prior to that and tracks I wrote that were unreleased that I wrote while I was in the Navy. A few of my tracks like “Affection”, “Faithful”, and “How I feel” (In that order) we’re inspired by a love I have for a particular person but was separated from that person due to us being high school sweethearts and going in two different directions and being stuck in relations that were (for lack of better words) toxic for us on both ends. But as time progressed, I believe divine intervention brought back to the city where we grew up, at the same time and at the perfect time because we both was finally able to break free from the toxic people we was with and now it’s like we just picked up where we left Off. Other songs like “Night Life” , “Picture me Rollin”, “Diamonds”, and “Berzerk” are songs I wanted to include in the album to show my versatility. Show I can also have a “Turn up” side of me as well as the RnB/Trapsoul, and with tracks like “Roses”, “Trapped Dreams” , and “Optimistic”, I really wanted to put a message out there with those. All relevant things that’s going today. Gun violence, racism, black on black crime, etc. those 3 songs detail those things and were inspired by events that’s been happening in my life and in the world over the past few years. The break down of all those songs is why I titled the album “The intro” because this is the introduction of myself.. “Blakk Juu” (Jason McCown) and the way I express myself.
What is unique about you and your music?
What’s unique about my music is I feel like I have a particular style and voice most people don’t have because, well there just not me. I’m very diverse and versatile. I have a plethora of styles I could go for when I hear a beat and I go with whatever speaks to me. Music is always changing and if you’re just a one trick pony you won’t last too long. With that being said, I like to change it up but also still staying within the realms of being me. Which I feel can’t get any better than that. “Originality is key, imitation is fraud”
What shaped your music?
What shaped my music started off of course was the J cole and Kendrick lamar vibes , mixed with some Big Krit , and down south H – town music. Along with some Bryson tiller and 90’s RnB. I rode those waves for a while just making different vibes and enhancing my writing skills until I was able to manipulate all of those styles to produce who I am today, “Blakk Juu” and my style of music.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
I realized I wanted to start doing music professionally after I released a track called “Never Loved Me”. At first I was really just playing around with it. Just making different tracks and feeling doubtful often quitting on myself because I almost felt like it was pointless to do music because I felt no one would like what I had to put. But one day I had a studio session in Seattle and on the way I stumbled across this beat and immediately I felt inspired. I ended up writing what I felt at the time was a hit and laid it down that same day. The moment I released that song, everyone on my ship started to become hip to it, and that’s when I knew I broke threw the next level of my journey and it was time for me to become serious.
What type of music do you listen to?
I like to listen to a lot of rap of course mixed in with some old school RnB and trap soul music.
Sometimes even a couple rock songs and country if it fits my taste.
What inspires you to write music?
What inspires me to write music is just my everyday life and experiences I go through or went through. I’m a writer naturally, it’s my passion. When I hear a beat that I like..I get in a mode and I freestyle and jot down whatever comes to my head. That’s how you get authentic lyrics.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
I like to be active, workout or play sports (football or basketball) I was an athlete before I started my music career.
Happiness to you is…
Happiness to me is just being proud of what you do and how you do it. Happiness to me is self love/care.. happiness to me is peace of mind.. happiness to me is being around my loved ones and seeing them happy. Happiness to me is knowing that God loves me and has greatness in store for me.
