Trillest Entertainment Presents Exclusive Interview: Rising Artist Monte
What is your name and what city do you rep?
A. I’m Monte from Detroit, 7 mile.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
A. I just put out my first single ‘I Declare’. With all the murders and injustice in my community I felt like I had to be bold in my message in a time like this. I wrote it probably the day after George Floyd’s death. My boy Loco already sent me the beat and I was just sitting on it for a few weeks, when I had the idea for the song it was the vibe I was going for. I’m glad it was able to come together so smoothly.
What is unique about you and your music?
A. One thing is I’m multi-faceted, I’m an actor and filmmaker as well. With music, it’s hard to describe, I just have a different approach to my music. Ain’t too many of the new rappers making the type of music I’m working on, I rather have a good song than a good hook or verse. I spend a lot of time with my music, I gotta feel every piece of the song and if I don’t, song’s not done.
What shaped your music?
A. My upbringing, I spent a lot of time with my grandma listening to old Motown records and songs she grew up listening to, two of my biggest influences are Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. I studied music, paying attention to everything individual instrument, listening to the artist pronounce their words to give the song a different feeling, I just connected with it. When I was in elementary school I had a teacher that would teach us hip hop and had us battles against each other. I think I was the rap battle champ for a few months one time in third grade. It’s in my blood man haha.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
A. I wrote my first song my sophomore year in high school and it’s been a wrap since then.
What type of music do you listen to?
A. I got on to rapping listening to Wayne, Kanye, and Em after a while I got deep into the classic lyricist, Nas, Rakim, OutKast – Andre 3000 can’t be touched as far as I’m concerned. I had to get a little more mature before I could really get into Hov and Biggie, now they both probably in my top 5. When it’s time to slow down I’ll throw on some D’angelo, Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Janet Jackson. Today I’ll bump all them and mix it with Dababy, Anderson Paak, JID, can’t forget my other folks from the D 42 dugg, Sada baby, Tee Grizzly. I keep a open mind with music though, I know a little jazz, rock, punk and everything in between.
What inspires you to write music?
A. The world around me in general. I always wanted to tell stories about me, my family, my friends or just talk about what I see, how I perceive things, what I imagine and be able to keep people engaged the whole way through. I feel like I’m painting when I write and when it’s all put together it’s a masterpiece.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
A. Well I’m an actor and filmmaker as well. Acting was actually my first passion, I’ve been doing it longer than anything else, with me being in my first play when I was around 3 years old, I’ve done some commercials and movies since then with more on the way. When I got to high school I starting working behind the camera directing and editing and found out I like it, I study movies almost the same way I do music, dissecting every part of the film to see what makes it whole. I’m actually producing my first short film that should be wrapping up around the end of the year, More on that later…
Happiness to you is…
A. Waking up with a goal that motivates you while being 100% in control of your life. That’s the goal.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
A. Try that idea you have, people either gon rock with it or not. Be bold.
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
A. I’m working on my first ep right now, it’s too soon to give a release date but tap in with on ig @demontethompson and I’ll keep you updated through the process.
Where do we find you music / music projects?
A. ‘I Declare’ is out everywhere on all streaming platforms. It’s my first single and I’m very excited to share it with everybody.
Any last words for the readers?
A. I wouldn’t cancel 2020 just yet, stay tuned.
