Exclusive Interview: The Band of the Hawk
What is your name and what city do you rep?
The Band of the Hawk, reppin Houston TX Lord.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
As a collective, we dropped 3 joints in the last 2 months.
1. We re-released Yeaux Majesty’s debut LP, “THE LAWS” in April. We remixed and remastered it for the fans. Plus Yeaux Majesty used to be known as KING, so when he changed names we wanted to reintroduce him as an artist. Watch out for his next solo project, “MEMORABILIA” in Fall.
2. Noah Archangel dropped “FEATHERS: I” in May. A beat tape meant to inspire more collabs down the line. All beats have a limited license and can be used for new music, social media and podcasts. Noah’s got 5 other instrumental albums in “THE MASCHINE WARS” series released annually.
3. We dropped “SLAPBOXIN” this weekend to show support with global unrest. Recorded in a week during all the BS, Yeaux Majesty and Noah Archangel spit rhymes on tracks like they are boxing in the booth. All proceeds go to the familes of our slain brothers and sisters.
What is unique about you and your music?
The Band of the Hawk is unique in our style and approach to music in general. We do have that gritty lofi hip hop sound that is popular in NYC and LA, but being from TX we southern fry that sh*t. Add on that there’s 7 emcees that can show up at any time and you got a recipe for disaster.
What shaped your music?
Respect for the game, but more importantly the respect for the culture. We do this for the love of the music and for the respect of the legends and competition. The sound is a gumbo that goes from UGK to Wutang Clan to Jimi Hendrix.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
When the game went strip rap and real spit was hard to find. We knew we had to make what we wanted to hear. To make change you gotta do something you’ve never done.
What type of music do you listen to?
Lyrical Hip Hop from Roc Marciano, Griselda, Wutang. Electronic music like Drum n Bass or Flying Lotus. Jazz records from other countries, good for sampling bruh.
What inspires you to write music?
Truth be told, it can be a cartoon or a movie. Something this brotha said or I seen on Instagram. Most of the time just spinning a old record nobody remembers and wanting to recreate that feeling.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
All the Hawks train in martial arts and align with the 5% or Nation of Gods and Earths. So refining our minds and bodies is crucial. Outside of that, lots of traveling the world collecting instruments and memories.
Happiness to you is…
A beat machine, some records, a pair of fly sneakers and some gas.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Yo! It is the MUSIC BUSINESS. Handle it as such brothers. Get you a business manager, a lawyer, and an accountant. Make a plan for success and execute that joint.
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
With everything going on, all The Band of the Hawk has been in the studio finishing our next full length album, “B.I.B.L.E (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)”. 7 emcees bringing the heat on some beats Noah made in Egypt.
Also, another beat tape, “FEATHERS: II” and “MASCHINE WARS” is coming too.
