Is President Trump making things worse for A$AP Rocky?

By  |

With his pre-trial detention in its third week after a July 3rd altercation in Stockholm, many celebrities have taken to social media demanding A$AP Rocky’s release.

Arguably, no one more powerful and influential than the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

Trump Tweeted and used the hashtag #FreeRocky:

“Very disappointed in Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for being unable to act,” he wrote. “Sweden has let our African American Community down in the United States. I watched the tapes of A$AP Rocky, and he was being followed and harassed by troublemakers. Treat Americans fairly! #FreeRocky”

Is Trump’s intervention doing more harm than good?

The Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven’s press secretary took to Twitter in response to Trump’s tweets:

“Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has explained and emphasized the complete independence of the Swedish judicial system, prosecutors and courts. In Sweden, everyone is equal before the law. The Government is not allowed, and will not attempt, to influence legal proceedings.”

What happens next is anyone’s guess, but a negotiated release now seems very unlikely.
