Soundscan Showdown: Major Labels VS Independents
This weeks Soundscan Numbers shine a little light on the Current State of the Music Industry. Jim Jones' fourth solo album, Pray IV Reign sold 42,982 copies in its first week. Slim Thug's second solo album, Boss of All Bosses, sold 32, 721 copies in its first week.
Jim Jones is signed to major record label, Columbia Records while Slim Thug is signed to independent label, Koch Records. The marketing dollars for Jim Jones album, certainly exceeded the budget of Slim Thug's project. However, Jim Jones only sold just about 10,000 more copies than Slim thug did. This raises some very serious questions:
1. Are major labels almost on their way out?
2. Is it financially smarter to sign with an Independent Label?
3. Does it make sense in this day and age spending millions of marketing dollars on a project?

As long as people continue to think $free.99 is the best deal, the numbers will continue to drop
Soon it won't be the Music Business, it will just be plain ol' Music and artist will only do it for the love, the way they will make money is only on tour, actually it's already started...
PS: if ya don't know most of these labels Indie or Majors all play the numbers game at retail...who knows how real any of the sales are???

I don't think it has that much to do with the labels. The people decided. Jim and Slim didn't have the buzz and anticipation prior to releasing their albums. You were not hearing a lot of people saying ' I can't wait to cop that Jim Jones or Slim thug album" That's one of the reasons why Lil Wayne did so well the buzz and anticipation for him was big they lacked that momentum.
But also ask this question how many people actually thought they would produce big numbers?
