HBO's The Wire: The Complete Fifth Season DVD In Stores Now!

The Wire has never received an Emmy nomination for drama series, a crime almost as heinous as the ones that were perpetrated each week on this gritty Baltimore cop show.
All right, I'm exaggerating. Dealing drugs and committing first-degree murder, both of which happened routinely on The Wire, are far worse than an Emmy snub. Still, the lack of high-profile recognition for a show that dared to explore some of the major ills in American society seems flat-out wrong. And that is mentioned more than once during the extras on The Wire: The Complete Fifth Season ($60), a DVD that preserves all 10 episodes in the finale of this HBO classic.
If you have never entered the world inhabited by Bunk, Bubbles and Omar, stop reading this right now and rent the DVDs of the first four seasons. After absorbing every gripping chapter that preceded it, then you can dive into Season 5 fully informed and able to appreciate how numerous narrative threads ultimately tie together, courtesy of a murder case in which (symbolism alert) a ribbon is tied around each victim's wrist.
Journalists and news junkies may be the unspoken target audience for this DVD since the Fourth Estate (like City Hall in Season 3 and the Baltimore public school system in Season 4) is the institution that undergoes the most scrutiny during The Wire's swan song.
A featurette called "The Wire: The Last Word" focuses specifically on the industry, giving several real editors and reporters the chance to offer their opinions on the state of the media today. It's not a pretty picture.
In general, though, the extras aren't as plentiful as loyal Wire fans might have hoped. The aforementioned series retrospective, "The Wire: Odyssey," is somewhat entertaining, and the six commentary tracks are informative, especially to Marylanders who get a kick out of all the shout-outs to the real Baltimore personalities and places that pop up in the episodes. But it's impossible to leave these DVDs without wanting more: additional commentary tracks, some deleted scenes, even the featurette about drug kingpin Prop Joe that appeared on On Demand.

- it started out avons world..then it was stringers world while he was in jail...then prop joe and marlo started getting a peice...then it was avon and marlo's again then marlo was running things ..with omar trying to fuck wit him...whew and thats just the criminals..there was also the cops, docks, schools, the projects and the media...it was the greatest show ever based on the scope it realistically portrayed..RIP Omar, Boddie..(my man)

I dont even watch HBO anymore. For real, I'd like to see what the dude Marlo is up to. Hands down the best "villian" in a LONG TIME!
