Soundscan Showdown: Major Labels VS Independents
This weeks Soundscan Numbers shine a little light on the Current State of the Music Industry. Jim Jones' fourth solo album, Pray IV Reign sold 42,982 copies in its first week. Slim Thug's second solo album, Boss of All Bosses, sold 32, 721 copies in its first week.
Jim Jones is signed to major record label, Columbia Records while Slim Thug is signed to independent label, Koch Records. The marketing dollars for Jim Jones album, certainly exceeded the budget of Slim Thug's project. However, Jim Jones only sold just about 10,000 more copies than Slim thug did. This raises some very serious questions:
1. Are major labels almost on their way out?
2. Is it financially smarter to sign with an Independent Label?
3. Does it make sense in this day and age spending millions of marketing dollars on a project?

i think that it may b possible that indie's will sell more than big labels soon !

I would Go with an Independent Label over a Major
And It's Sad 2 Say but I would Rather have a Fan Base in da South
I was Born and Raised in da Bronx, NY
However I went 2 College in Texas and Can Honestly Say
U Can Sell 100,000 Units Just in Texas Alone
Now Imagine Georgia, Arkansas, North and South Carolina
Just 2 Name a Few
Jim Jones Really Fell Off without Max B
It Kind of Makes U Wonder will Columbia Drop Him

Comment by Jerald Arnage on April 1, 2009 at 1:54pm - Of course it's financially smarter to sign with an Independent Label because there will always be less pressure for you to go multi-platinum...If you don't go nowhere near platinum on a Major Label then you've already landed completely in the red zone...If anything Slim Thug probably achieved more by selling 32,721 independently than what Jimmy did selling 42,982 his first week...Jimmy was suppose to do at least close to 120,000 not 42,982 so he flopped!
