Tuzla is situated at Sout-Eastern parts of Majevica mountain,at the average height above sea-level equalling 239 meters.According to the 1991 census,Tuzla municipaties had 131,861 inhabitants,and it covered the surface area of 303 km2.Tuzla is mentioned for the first time in written sources in the work ,,De administrando imperio,,by Byzantine emperor and historian,Konstantin Porfirogenit,from the middle of the tenth century.It is called ,,Salines,, there.South Slavs called the broad area of the present Tuzla territory ,,Soli,,(Bossalt).The name Tuzla originates from the Ottomans(Turk.tuz-salt).All of this tells that the mineral of salt,having been exploited in this area for thousands years,had a crucial influence on establishing and development of the settlements of Gornja Tuzla and Tuzla.IN the Ottoman rule period Tuzla had kadiluk status,and later a captaincy status.Since the end of the seventeenth century it had been gaining strategic importance for defense of the Northern bolderlines of the Ottoman Empire.At that time,a rectangular stone fortress with high walls and four towers was built instead of the ,,wooden town,,.It was destroyed in the year 1870.In the late eighteenth century Tuzla had about 5,000 inhabitants.Industrialization of Tuzla started under the Austro-Hungaarian rule,through modernization of salt production,opening coal mines,forests exploitation,opening other industrial plants,and particularly,through construction of Doboj-Tuzla railway.The period of the Kingdom of Serbs , Croats and Slovenians (The Kingdom of Yugoslavia)was mostly a stagnation period.A faster development period was between the World War 2 and the aggression to Bosnia and Herzegovina.Salt production was modernized,a strong chemical industry based on salt was developed ,new coal mines were opened,both pits and strip mining,civil engineering works were deloped and construction material industry,flour milling and bakery industry,yeast productin,fruit and vegetables processing plants,graphic industry,footwear industry,crafts,restaurant-hotel managment,car traffic,trade...
Tuzla was connected with Sarajevo,Banjaluka,Zagreb and Belgrade by modern traffic roads and railways in the period of the Socialist Federate Republic of Yugoslavia.Tuzla also had its airport built.According to national product,it was one of the best developed municipalities in the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the year 1900.Tuzla is also an educational center of the North-Eastern Bosnia region.One of the oldest school institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina is here year 1674.The well-known Tuzla Grammar school was founded in 1899.Several important culture institutions are active in Tuzla:National Theater(founded in 1898),National and University Libary,Eastern Bosnia Museum,Historical Archives,intenational Portrait Gallery,Youth Center,as well as several amateur culture associations.There is a publishing activity developing,several weekly magazines are published,several radio and television stations are broadcasting...
The University in Tuzla was founded in 1976.Presently 6,000 students are educated at the University in Tuzla..The first health institution ,,,Hastahana,, was founded in 1874 .Today Tuzla is a large health care center with a Clinical Hospital Center,where all kinds of health care services are rendered.
Sports in Tuzla have a rich past and tradition.There are many sports associations and clubs in Tuzla today.The best known sports club is ,,Sloboda,,.Soccer players from Tuzla,basketball players boxers nad trac-and-field athletes are the top-level sportsmen.Exploiting salt deposits and chemical industry development created severe environmental problems in Tuzla.The largest problem is the ground sinking problem under the city,under its center historical core.From the year 1914 until 1973 the ground of area surface about 500 hectares sunk for about 7.5 meters.Many valuable buildings nad 10,000 inhabitans had to be moved out to West and East from the ground settling zone,where new housing,schools and other facilities were built.In order to stop the ground settling,reducation of exploiting had to take place,even the exploitation stopping at localities of Tušanj and Slani bunari..
