Our commentary this week focused on the upcoming Holiday Season and some other things here and there.

BE THE MEDIA | Buy The Book!

We had another great interview this week with media expert and author David Mathison (http://www.BeTheMedia.com) on his latest book, Be The Media.

We talked about a lot of important Independent Media topics that are covered in Be The Media, ranging from:
  • The importance of now that almost anyone is able to create & distribute all sorts of media content cheaper and easier than ever (books, websites, radio shows, video, etc.)
  • Copyright vs. Creative Commons
  • Various U.S. laws that have restricted the creative offerings of mainstream media (TV, Radio, etc.) through controls in how things are distributed and what the average person can do about it can be done about it
  • How those entering into the Music Industry overall needs to hop onto using all forms of Independent Media to form a solid & dedicated fanbase while still earning money & keeping creative freedom
  • And LOTS of other things!
There aren't new episodes of Black Agenda Report or Direct EFX segments due to the length of this week's interview.

BlackRadioIsBack.com Music: Chris Read & Marc Hype Present The World's Greatest Christmas Mixtape

We're keeping it moving over here BlackRadioIsBack.com & FuseBox Radio Broadcast family catching up on blog posts over here (partially due to other commitments lately & partially due to needing to be inspired a bit musically)...

We've posted up some pretty fly music mixes, remix projects and mixtapes from UK DJ & producer Chris Read over here in the past and now, he hit us with his latest joint, a collaborative mixtape project with 2 time ITF mix champion Marc Hype for the holiday season called The World's Greatest Christmas Mixtape (humble title, right...heh).

Here's the description from Chris Read below about the project & how it came into being:
When it came to putting together a mixtape at this time of the year, I knew I couldn't do it without getting my friend and 2 time ITF champion, Marc Hype in on the act.

Marc and I first met about this time last year when DJing at the Rap History club night in Berlin and bonded over our love of obscure rap 12s, unusual breaks and, as it turns out, funky Christmas records. So it only seemed right that we collaborate on a Christmas mixtape.

The result of many hours of digging, many more of mix construction and a few email conversations is what we've decided to call 'The World's Greatest Christmas Mixtape', a title we hope will be taken in good humour and a dose of Christmas cheer.

You'd be forgiven for thinking a Christmas mix is going to be a little corny and to an extent you might be right, but what the hell.

If some of our favourite artists of all time (Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Michael Jackson to name a few) can get away with making Christmas records with their integrity in tact, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't give some of those records our loving touch - so that's what we've done; Two mixes taking in some funk fueled Christmas classics, forgotten Funk gems, a little Soul, Hip Hop from the 80s, 90s and beyond, and even a touch of Reggae and Latin all with that Christmas theme.

Merry Christmas - We hope you enjoy!
I've been rocking this heavy for the past week (and that's a VERY big compliment, by this time of year, I'm ready to throw out the window any radio that's playing cloying Holiday Season music) and had to share it with everyone...let us know what you think and hope you enjoy it!

About Me
My mission for BlackRadioIsBack.com, as the official blog of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast, is to bring back the spirit of Black Radio via the Internet and the World Wide Web.

In the past few years, the term, mission and mentality of "Black Radio" in the United States has been at the very least ignored and that the worst, totally disregarded, disrespected and shunned.

In my mind, Black Radio at its best is & will always be the format that brings to listeners:

1. A balanced combination of diverse & interesting music in multiple formats – after all Black Radio was the format that first exposed Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues, Rock Music - yes, Rock and Roll has Black American musical foundations - do the history, Gospel and Hip-Hop music to the masses.

2. A quality mix of news, interviews and commentary to the Black American community (and to anyone else interested) - editorial, political, health, social, etc.

3. A mission to truly connect with its listener community on multiple fronts Black Radio, in most of the mainstream airwaves, has been taken over by what's called "urban radio", "contemporary urban radio", etc.

It seems that with this format, what most stations, radio hosts and mixers do is keep things in a very narrow vision of what the Black American cultural experience is supposed to be like and how its represented - basically, watering things down.

For example:

* When you hear the same joint for the 1,000,000th time on the radio and you know the artist has an album release (or multiple releases) out that you can at least TRY to hear more tracks from before a 3 month period OR you always hear the same music artists in constant rotation = NOT quality Black Radio

* When "Old School" music is defined as being from 5 years ago and/or not acknowledging music from the past = NOT quality Black Radio

* When there is only one viewpoint of what Black America and Black Americans represent (either straight 24-7 criminality without consequences or creativity or only the civil rights generation is great with everyone else not under that being subpar) = NOT quality Black Radio

* Putting on the same sound effect and/or screaming over 10 times in a row for a 3 minute song that is not even hot = NOT quality Black Radio

This list can go on for days…

BlackRadioIsBack.com will have music audio & videos from all over the world along with reviews (for both mainstream and independent artists), written and audio interviews with various folks in the community (music artists, authors, businesspeople, activists, etc.), book, magazine and movie reviews and editorials.

BlackRadioIsBack.com will also be a location where others who are promoting the spirit of Black Radio will also be represented and highlighted.

I hope that everyone enjoys the site and gets stimulated by the true Black Radio Experience!

Peace,

MINI-BIOGRAPHY OF DJ FUSION & THE FUSEBOX RADIO BROADCAST (UPDATED: March 2009):

Umm, OK....I'm DJ Fusion (real name: Mary Nichols), a short (5 feet tall even), above average looking (I think at least a "B", even if a low one....) African-American female DJ who is a graduate of Rutgers University (c/o 2001; Rutgers College) with a degree in American Studies and a minor in History.

I'm a Radio, Mixtape & Club DJ, with my main music focus being in the genres of Hip-Hop, Breakbeats, Reggae, Funk, Acid Jazz, Soul, House, Disco, DC GoGo, Electronica, Rock and Classics - Black Music in general, both independent and mainstream.

Since its foundation in 1998 - when I created the show as an undergraduate student at Rutgers University - New Brunswick in New Jersey - the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast has been around to expose the absolute BEST of Hip-Hop & Soul Music from all over the world (and Black Music in general) along with bringing quality interviews, news, and commentary. Along with fellow co-host/DJ/Producer/Partner Jon Judah (added on as part of the FuseBox Radio crew in 2004), we try our best to stick to that mission and bring great sounds, vibe and content to the masses - what Black Radio (not "Urban Radio") was/is all about.

From it's roots at Rutgers University Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM), the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast is a mixshow that has spread to the following internet radio stations and outlets (as of April 2009):

UrbanNetwork.com's The Mix Internet Radio Station (Urban Network Magazine), ConspiracyUK.com, FONYE Radio, VI Radio, MyBlockRadio.net, OKRP.com, Beyond.FM, Sprint Radio Extra/mSpot (via the WWACN/Worldwide Alpha Communications Network), DurdeeSouth.com, Planet Urban/PlanetUrban.com.au, BlockJams.com, AmalgamDigital.com, ReeWineMusic.com, SouthBound.FM, TheBestJams.com, CrackAudio.com, EG Radio/ExtravaGangsta Radio, Stop Beefin' Stop Eatin' Radio, Ceesiety Radio , StreetsD.com - Street Mos Magazine Radio, Mixshow Blast Radio, Progressive Blend Radio, Nilo-Radio.com, Rutgers University Radio, WRSU 88.7 FM (on hiatus due to medical emergency with radio show engineer), DeadBeat Radio, Blip.TV, FlyTunes.FM/FlyCast, HipHopSoulRadio.com, Digiwaxx Presents: The Blast , MixLaWax.com, HipHopHoney.com, 907 Jamz, The6.FM , UnderWorldMixRadio.com, 1.FM Jamz, True Fire Radio, Blayze University Radio, iBlog126.com, Miro, WSOUF.com, Gutta Muzik (HD) Radio (coming soon) and BlackCoffeeChannel.com (coming soon) .

The syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast also a broadcast partner with journalist Glen Ford's Black Agenda Report (http://www.BlackAgendaReport.com) and the HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Radio Network's Direct EFX (http://www.myspace.com/directefx101) to bring extra syndicated programming segments of news, entertainment and commentary.

Under the business, FuseBox Media LLC, I also engage freelance article writing for various Internet and paper publications and do various music projects (music production, mixtape hosting & production, etc.).

The official blog of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast was established in October of 2007, BlackRadioIsBack.com (http://www.BlackRadioisBack.com). BlackRadioIsBack.com is a writen extension of the radio show and contains things such as music, book and movie reviews, editorials, world news highlights and more.

The main areas I have done live DJ sets and events have been in the New Jersey, New York City, Philadelphia & DC Metro areas. Some of the clubs, lounges and stores where the FuseBox Radio Broadcast has represented include SOBS, the National Black Theatre in Harlem, the Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Barnard College @ Columbia University, Rutgers University, Club Platinum, Rebar Lounge, D'Palace, African Globe Studios, Flava Lounge, Hunter College, NY Brands Clothing Store, Laila Lounge, Halcyon, 169 Bar, The Court Tavern, the C-Note, DJ Hut and the Remote Lounge, amongst others.

During my student history, I was a part of lining up shows for various student organizations at Rutgers University - New Brunswick and non-profit organizations for Hip-Hop Artists, Authors, Lecturers, etc. to get exposure, including being the President & one of the co-founders of the Rutgers University Student Community of Hip-Hop (aka RUSCH, the 1st Hip-Hop organization @ Rutgers University) from August 2000 - August 2002.

Since 1998, I have also been a part of the African New Dawn Radio Broadcast staff at Rutgers University Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM) with Alvin Fair.

So for all of my Music Artists, Businesses, Authors, Directors and just people in general, if you want to:
