It seems like people don't want to think these days. People don't want to hear anything that will make you thinks or makes any sense. Hip hop use to mean something to people. It was a way for people to express themselves about anything from politics to life (it was relateable). Now days it seems like people just like listening to people that aren't saying sh*t, just something simple and ignorant.

Don't blame the gun, blame the shooter. Labels are out to "sell" records. They are interested in making money, and they have to be or they won't survive. Thus they're looking for what people want to listen to because that's what people will buy. Honestly, I think the artists are to blame. Listeners want to have fun, they want music they can dance to, relax to, laugh to, live to. A lot of listeners like to listen to shit that makes them think, but it depends on who's mouth its coming from i.e. who they can relate to the most. Mos Def might say some intelligent, poignant shit and few people hear it. Jigga might say the same shit, but use different words and get mad props for it. Why is that? Cause Jigga has proven to be more versitile than Mos Def. He can touch the intellects, the streets, and the club. Now, I'mma big Mos Def fan (I bought, yes bought all three of his solo albums), but Jigga is just a more versitle artist. And I'm not talking about lyrically or talent wise, because Mos Def is a good vocalist and can dabble in everything from Hip-hop to Blues to Rock. I'm saying that Jigga can appeal to more markets. And his ability to make a hit record for the club, or the streets, or whatever is what distinguishes him. Ever since 98' (Hard Knock Life 2) he's been making hit records, so now he can jump on a Coldplay song and people will still be listening. It's all on the artist. It's not that we should dumb shit down to make a hit. It's that we have to have the abilty to make a hit record and still have quality content. There's a lotta shit that's hot. Now- it can be "dumb" hot shit or it can be "smart" hot shit. Music is music. “Crank that Soulja boy” wasn't a hit because of the lyrics. It blew up becasue it had a hot beat, a catchy hook, and that shit was funny as hell! Now everyone knew it was just a fun, silly record. That cat was just a 16 y.o. kid from Atlanta making a fun, catchy song. So ask yourself...what's the similarity between "Crank that Soulja boy" and "Hard Knock Life"?..........Give up?. Both songs afforded the artists a platform. Both songs got the industry and fans attention. The key difference is that Jay-z is a smart man who took peoples attention and ran with it. He just kept dropping quality content. Soulja Boy is an ignorant kid who's going to squander his opportunity. My point is, in most cases the only thing that makes a particular song a hit is a great, addictive beat and a great hook. In most cases, a GREAT artist will take a song with a great hook and beat and deliver some great verses, but lets be honest...in most cases all the rapper has to do is not ruin it. Once you make a hit, whether a silly dance record or an interesting portrayal of hood struggle and community, you have established a platform. Now it’s the artists' responsibility to give us quality content. You notice how many people complain about the "dumbing down" of hip-hop? That's because they're waiting for an artist to give them that shit that makes them think. But at the same time they want that artist to give them something they can listen to in the club. Versatility. I'm not a big Kanye fan, but I respect him as an artist. He's about as Versatile as they come and he has the platinum plaques and fanbase that prove how valueble versatility is. I’m not saying he’s the smartest guy around, but he has said some thought provoking shit. OUTKAST is an even better example of versatility, and I don’t even have to explain why! Just listen to the Art of Storytelling 4!!! Damn…this shit is long…think I got a little carried away. Forward the sermon to your friends people, lol.
